„When someone is born in the USA as a Swiss, then becomes an American and travels back and forth between the two worlds, then he/she is at home on both places, but not entirely in either.“

Suzanne Ledergerber-Roost

P1070435.JPG_full.jpgSuzanne was born in the USA where her parents, twin sister and both brothers still live. She flies to LA twice a year to visit them. Often accompanying her on these trips are her three children - all born in the USA.California offers not only Venice Beach, but also proximity to Mexico, and the desert area on the way to Las Vegas - all contrasts between city, land, congestion and wide open spaces. All these factors influenced Suzanne and her paintings.

Her youth was influenced by the time she spent in the USA, Germany and Switzerland. St.Gallen, Switzerland finally became the home of her family. Suzanne chose textile design as her profession where she completed her training in the city of St.Gallen, a Mecca of the Swiss textile industry. Already as a child Suzanne loved the diversity of art where she felt her talent lay.She never let go of her goal and pursued it in her career as well as her private life. However, sometimes life takes us in different directions.

Travel and adventure were magnetizing. After completion of her professional training, she and her friend found their way to Africa. Living in the middle of the bush challenged their ability for self-organisation and improvisation including encounters with native animals, some of which they would rather not have met, their travels than let them to Australia, where they started a business - and became more and more a globetrotter. Five years later they travelled to Los Angeles. Suzanne opened a shop in Venice Beach with Swiss, as well as American specialties. At this time in their lives, the two worlds of the USA and Switzerland seemed to come together.

Suzanne Ledergerber now lives back in Switzerland since 1992. Suzanne vented her creativity by designing T-shirts for a Swiss sit-com series in 1994. She also designed covers for a new collection of CD greeting cards -and then returned to painting in oil. Nowadays she paints mainly acrylic on canvas.

Her paintings are characterized by strong, full colors. The source of her subjects has been the world as she observes it with its contrasts and wide horizons. Hers is a world of dreams, yet her subijects are concrete. She plays with the fantasy of the observer and invites him to take part in her adventures, experiences and dreams. Her world becomes his and he shares her love of nature, sun, plants, the animal world, the desert, oceans, cities and fonts, with her.
